Kayaking the Black Canyon

It was a crazy adventure. Definitely one of the dumbest fun things I've ever done!

Let me start by saying we didn't actually kayak the entire stretch of the Black Canyon. The Black Canyon stretch of the Gunnison River from East Portal to SOB is Class V+. (Eric and I both started kayaking this June) There are 17 ft waterfalls, mandatory portages and deadly consequences if you slip up. But the lower stretch of the Black below Warner is only Class III.

Somehow Eric and I got it into our heads to put in at Warner and do the lower stretch of the Black. We still kayaked a secton that on average only 20 people a year ever get to see.

When we were kayaking the lower stretch of the Black we did meet some kayakers who had come the whole way thru the canyon. There were 7 guys and 2 of the 7 had holes in their boats and one of the other guys had a massive dent. I'm excited to see the videos they got and highly impressed with the sections and waterfalls they ran.

Both Eric and I had hiked the Warner Route earlier in the summer. It's easy when you are just walking it, but everything changes when you are trying to drag a 40 lb boat behind you or stopping it from sliding down the route in front of you. We realize about a mile or so in that maybe we had slightly underestimated how challenging it was going to be. But at that point, we were already past the point of no return. Not impossible by any means, just a giant pain in the ass.

The Warner Route starts 2700 feet above the river and in 2.75 miles you are at the river. If that doesn't give you an idea about how steep it is then just watch one of the videos. It's steep! There are loose rocks and large boulder sections, trees to climb over, down climbs and more.

We thought it would only take a couple hours to get the boats down, but we were sooo wrong. It was over 6 hours till we were at the river! It was way to late to put on so we hiked back up, ate, slept, came back in the morning, hiked down again and this time we got to kayak.

The Black Canyon was AWESOME! Its beautiful and knowing we were getting on a stretch of river so few people ever get to see made it even better. It was definitely nerve wracking because we knew if shit hit the fan we were stuck in that canyon with no way out except to continue down the river.

10 minutes down the trail and we are already making repairs

We found a couple pieces of my boat on the hike up

Even though it was a lot of work...once we were on the water it was totally worth it!!!

Return to Thailand

It has been quite a while since I have lived outside the states and it is time. A couple months ago I signed a contract to go teach English to Thai students at a school somewhere over there. I won't find out what school I will be placed in until I finish the course around mid-November. I'm not really worried about it. The country is amazing, the people are some of the friendliest in the world, the food is delicious, and there is way too much fun stuff to do - scuba diving, elephant riding, caving, rope swings, full moon parties, cooking classes, markets, beaches, tigers, and I'll be right next to Laos and Cambodia. Can't wait to live in a treehouse again that is so far off the gound the only way in and out is to zipline. When I go back to Cambodia I have a package of goodies for the kids I met years ago at one of the orphanages. (I have wanted to get back there for so long now.) I would also like to re-visit Ankor Wat when I don't have giardia - that way I can enjoy it more without always looking around for the next squat tiolet.

Normally when you teach abroad you have to sign a year long contract, but I found a short term one. Perfect for someone with commitment issues, such as myself. I also enjoy being in the states in the summer. I'll be leaving November 4th and will be back in the states again around May 4th.

I know very little about the teaching part. I know I will be teaching kids and that they will be different ages and at different levels, I will have to make weekly lesson plans, and that the classes can be large - up to almost 50 kids. Its hard to imagine what it will be like right now, but I will def be finding out soon! I am still in the early stages of my 120 hour tefl course.

I'll finish teaching at the end of March which gives me a full month to enjoy my favorite holiday in the world- Songkran (a 5 day water fight!) and goof around in SE Asia before working somewhere back over here next summer. If you have any time off in April thats the time to come over for a visit.

All these pictures posted are from my last trip to Thailand back in 2008. I was in and out of the country for about a month. It was an awesome trip, but not long enough. I'm really excited to spend the whole winter there and really get to know the country, the people, and culture. And I can not wait to eat the food!

Oktoberfest in Vail

Everyone dancing down at Lionshead
It was a crazy weekend working up in Vail for Oktoberfest. Lots of work, lots of brats and lots of shots!

A couple times a year I get to work in Vail setting up and breaking down events. Usually we are working in snowpants and boots so working in shorts was a welcome change.

People were not signing up for the Brat Eating Contest so I did. They are a lot harder to eat than a hot dog, trust me. I'll have to work on my technique for next year =)

Brat Eating Contest
The giant two down from my right won. He ate 5 brats in only 3 minutes! I got down 2 =)

I had to sign a sausage waiver...incase I
choked on one??? haha!

It was totally worth all the free beer! And I even made the
newspaper - my parents will be so proud!

The spill from our first night. It only took 3 days to clean up
Last night out at the bar with George in the background

Our second weekend getting away with skinny dipping in the pool next door =)

Awesome weekend with awesome friends...I was not kidding about the surplus of shots!

Luckily I didn't find out about the shot wheel till the last night!
